| ShowBusiness Opens at NYC's Pioneer Theater, June 6
"ShowBusiness: the Road to Broadway", a new film by Dori Berinstein featuring the Broadway casts and creators of Wicked, Avenue Q, Taboo, and Caroline, or Change, will play the Pioneer Theater (E. 3rd Street between Avenue A and B) beginning June 6th. Regent Releasing and Liberation Entertainment are releasing the film, and its distribution will be platformed to many markets around the country throughout the Spring and Summer, including Los Angeles on June 1st. Among those featured in the film are Rosie O'Donnell, Boy George, Alan Cumming, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Lithgow, Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, John Tartaglia, Tony Kushner, Jeanine Tesori, Tonya Pinkins, George C. Wolfe, Harvey Fierstein, Anika Noni Rose, Euan Morton, Bobby Lopez, Jeff Marx and Cyndi Lauper. "ShowBusiness follows four high-profile productions that eventually became Tony Award-nominees: a lavish musical prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked; the controversial O'Donnell/Boy George collaboration, Taboo; the highly anticipated Kushner/Tesori musical, Caroline, or Change and the irreverent musical sleeper hit with puppets, Avenue Q.
Magical Broadway nights
One of the most popular shows on Broadway, Mamma Mia, will come to London for five days, beginning Dec. 18. Mamma Mia is well-known for its ABBA music, such as Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money and Take a Chance on Me. "I think everybody will enjoy Mamma Mia," said Broadway in London spokesperson Patrick Harrison. "This show is currently one of the hottest tickets in New York and London (England)." Illusionist David Copperfield (Jan. 15), Blast (Jan. 28-20), Chicago (Feb. 19-20) and Evita (March 10-11) round out the season. Blast, Chicago and Evita have a combined 14 Tony awards. "Lovers of the classic Broadway musicals will love Gypsy, Chicago and Evita," Harrison said. "Lovers of music will be blown away by Blast, while Cirque and David Copperfield will draw a non-typical theatre-going crowd to the John Labatt Centre." Last year, 2,000 subscriptions were sold for the season.
Asia Society and NAATF to Host Double Exposure Panel
Asia Society and National Asian American Theater Festival (NAATF) will host "Double Exposure: Connecting Arts Presenters with the Asian American Theater Community" -- a panel discussion moderated by Mark Russell to encourage a deeper understanding of the vibrancy and history of Asian American theater and to develop strategies to encourage a broader presentation of this work -- on Friday, June 15 at 4:00 PM at Asia Society (725 Park Avenue at 70th Street) in Manhattan. A performance of Ping Chong and Company's Undesirable Elements will take place later the same evening at 8:00 PM."Ralph Pena, Artistic Director of Ma-Yi Theater Company will provide a context on Asian American theater today, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mark Russell, producer of Under the Radar. The panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities for presenting Asia American theater more broadly around the U.S..
