Pakistanis Rally for Democracy

The crisis in Pakistan may be a world a way from Rochester geographically, but for the local Pakistani community the crisis hits home.

Dozens of people took part in a rally at Twelve Corners in Brighton Sunday. Local Pakistanis are urging an end to the martial law in their homeland.

They are outraged the government of Pervez Musharraf has suspended the constitution. They're also upset at reports that people are being tortured, arrested and detained.

"We as Americans cherish democracy, we cherish freedom, we cherish liberty, we want to show our solidarity with the people of Pakistan who are fighting this fight over there," said Mara Ahmed, organizer.

The crisis in Pakistan has caused a headache for the U.S. Pakistan is a key ally in the war on terror. The country also has nuclear weapons that could end up in the wrong hands.

OUTLOOK UK smaller company results for the week to Nov 30

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The following is a compilation of UK smaller company results due out in the week to Nov 30.

MONDAY NOV 19 The recent result from the Department of Health review of the second wave ISTCs was something of a mixed bag: Care UK PLC had its pending contracts confirmed and picked up two new contracts; however, the DoH asked for a voluntary termination of the West Midlands diagnostic contract. Sebastien Jantet of Investec Securities is not intending formally to change his forecasts until after the prelims. Nevertheless, his initial take suggests that he will be looking at a downgrade of around 15 pct to his FY2008 EPS forecasts (new EPS of circa 23 pence, from 27), driven by the removal of the West Midlands contract. For the following year, the analyst expects to downgrade around 14 pct to about 32 pence from 37.5, again reflecting contract changes.

Beautiful Horrors

Putting on a high school play is difficult enough. But when that play is based on one of the most popular movies of all time, the challenge can be that much greater.Micah Hensley, Lee's Summit High School drama director, understood the challenge when he began preparing for this weekend's production of Walt Disney's "Beauty and the Beast.""I told the kids that with them comes an expectation," Hensley said. "(The audience) is going to compare you to the movie, they're going to compare you to Broadway, whether you want them to or not." .

Broadway talks bomb

NEW YORK - Talks broke off yesterday between striking Broadway stagehands and theater producers, and performances for more than two dozen Broadway shows were canceled through Nov. 25, the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

"We are profoundly disappointed to have to tell you that talks broke off tonight, and that no further negotiations are scheduled," Charlotte St. Martin, the executive director of the League of American Theatres and Producers, said in a statement.

"Out of respect for our public and our loyal theatergoers, many of whom are traveling from around the world, we regret that we must cancel performances through Sunday Nov. 25," she added.

Bruce Cohen, a spokesman for Local 1, the stagehands' union, said that before the talks broke off, the producers informed the union that what the local had "offered was simply not enough."

The union declined further comment.

Matt McCormack recently moved to S.A. from Austin. A native of Memphis, McCormack is a first-class singing songwriter whose work sounds something like a fusion of alt-rock, pop and Americana. He's turned in stints in Los Angeles and Nashville; his songs have been covered by folks such as Honeybrowne with Pat Green and Gene Simmons of Kiss. McCormack also happens to be Alejandro Escovedo's son-in-law.

McCormack works solo and with the band Rock Bottom Choir, an all-star outfit that includes Will Sexton, Joey Shuffield and Matt Mollica.
