Off-Broadway Remains Vibrant Option for Strike-Stranded Theatregoers

The Nov. 18 news that 27 Broadway shows would remain closed through Nov. 25, stranding thousands of Thanksgiving week theatregoers, sent a shockwave through the theatre community from stagehand to dresser to actor to restaurateur to gift shop owner.

The stalled talks between striking stagehands and producers have had a profound effect on those who make their living from Broadway, but it's also a serious disappointment to those who make Broadway a part of their Thanksgiving-week tradition.

When Les Misrables was playing its original run, the annual performance on Thanksgiving night, for example, traditionally sold out. There was something about the show's message of hope and sacrifice that made the evening popular with families on Thanksgiving. An 8 PM performance of the revival production at the Broadhurst Theatre was scheduled for this year's Thanksgiving night as well.

Stage set for Greatest Show in Surf

Australia's Mick Fanning has all but wrapped up the ASP world championship with three events to go, but he still has work to do.

Fanning still has six weeks before his coronation, but there are four more championships he will have a chance at.

And those might be as important as the season championship.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing begins tomorrow with the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Alii Beach Park in Haleiwa.

The Triple Crown is kind of the Super Bowl and the World Series wrapped all into one for the surf crowd, and a champion certainly does not want to be shut out on his sport's biggest stage.

Unlike the men's, the women's series title will be won or lost in Hawaii's surf. Top-ranked Stephanie Gilmore of Australia leads Brazil's Silvana Lima by just 606 points.

Wicked and Jersey Boys Top Billboard's Cast Album Chart — Again

The first seven spots on the Billboard Top Cast Album chart are holdovers from last week: The original cast recording of Wicked again tops the list.

Last week, the constant chart-topper, Decca Broadway's Wicked, reclaimed its No. 1 position following a six-week reign by the Jersey Boys. The Rhino release (which again places No. 2) of the Four Seasons musical had marked the longest stretch on the countdown by a recording other than Stephen Schwartz's Oz-based tale.

Legally Blonde's original Broadway cast recording on Ghostlight Records holds steady at No. 3 (for a fifth week), as Decca Broadway's Mamma Mia! and Walt Disney's The Lion King round out the top five. (Decca's Spring Awakening and RCA Victor's Avenue Q place at No. 6 and 7.)

Columbia's original cast recording of Camelot released, yes, in 1960 slides to No.
