A dramatic new approach to the theatrical docudrama

Scottish military veterans recall the pride of their fabled regiment and their fateful, disillusioning service in Iraq.

New Yorkers reflect on the disappearance of valued objects and the loss of cherished loved ones.

These are shorthand descriptions of two unusual New York hit shows. One is "Black Watch," an exhilarating import from the National Theatre of Scotland, which just finished a run at St. Ann's Warehouse, a Brooklyn theater venue.

"Gone Missing" is a diverting original piece by the inventive young troupe The Civilians, now at Off Broadway's Barrow Street Theatre in an extended run through Jan. 6.

Though dissimilar in some respects, both pieces reflect a theatrical trend that's steadily gathered steam in recent decades: the rise of documentary drama.

Broadway strike disappoints fans traveling to N.Y. on bus tours

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bus tour packages are a popular way for many out-of-state theater fans to get dinner and see a Broadway show in New York.

But the stagehands' strike has led to waves of disheartened day-trippers, logistical headaches for organizers, and lower revenues for tour companies.

Starr Tours, with offices in Philadelphia and Trenton, New Jersey, usually sends more than 10,000 people to see Broadway shows every year.

Vice president Sandy Borowsky says that number will be down this year. The show stoppage has forced the cancellation of 8 buses so far. That represents more than 400 would-be theatergoers.

Deborah Joyce of Senior Citizens United Community Services of Camden County, New Jersey, says her group canceled a busload of travelers planning to see "Mamma Mia!" on Sunday.

Broadway stalemate may kill holiday season along with shows on the brink

Broadway is bracing for a $135 million loss in ticket sales if the strike isn't settled soon - and shows that were already on the brink may close even sooner.

"It's not good for the city," Mayor Bloomberg said Monday as producers and stagehands remained deadlocked over benefits and work rule changes.

Two days of intense talks over the weekend did nothing to push the sides closer to resolving the 10-day strike that has crippled the Theater District.

And if it continues, the most lucrative time of year for Broadway may be squandered.

Last year, ticket sales brought in $134.4 million from Thanksgiving to Christmas - about 14% of annual ticket sales - with $23 million coming in during Thanksgiving week alone.

Bloomberg said it's not just the loss of money he's worried about: "I think what hurts more is our reputation," he said.

Broadway's `Grinch' Will Reopen

NEW YORK (AP) — All the Whos down in Whoville will have holiday work this year after a Manhattan judge ordered the Broadway production of "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" to reopen despite the ongoing stagehands strike.

"I'm going to grant the injunction" against the lockout, state Supreme Court Justice Helen Freedman said Wednesday. "I think one Grinch in town is enough."

Her ruling came a day after she heard arguments from producers of the show and owners of the theater housing the $6 million production. Producers, citing a special contract between the show and Jujamcyn Theaters, wanted the show to go on.

Meanwhile, The Nederlander Producing Co. and producers of seven shows in its nine Broadway theaters have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan seeking $35 million in damages from striking union members.

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' won't reopen during Broadway strike

The limited holiday engagement of "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" won't reopen until the lengthening labor dispute between Broadway stagehands and theater producers is settled, James Sanna, the show's producer, said Monday. "It's not like there's an option to rebook the show," Sanna said, adding that the musical "is losing a significant amount of money."

Sanna had wanted to resume Tuesday, the start of the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday when "Grinch" was to play 15 performances — almost twice the usual number of weekly performances for Broadway shows.

The producer said an agreement for "Grinch" was reached over the summer and signed by both the League of American Theatres and Producers and Local 1, the stagehands union, and the current contract wrangle does not involve his production.
