Ella at San Jose Rep Begins 6/23
Ella, the musical play about one of the most influential Jazz vocalists of the 20th century, comes to San Jose Rep. A theatrical event that weaves myth and memory, comedy and drama, mystery and music, Ella, will take you inside the heart and soul of Ella Fitzgerald, one of the world's most beloved jazz singers. Performances begins June 23, opening June 29, through July 22. "The time is July, 1966. The place is a concert stage in Nice on the French Riviera. Ella Fitzgerald, 'The First Lady of Song,' rehearses for an upcoming concert to be taped for posterity," describes press notes, "Her producer requests that she add more patter about her life to the show. Gathered with her favorite musicians, Ella begins to reminisce, uncovering a past the public never knew. Starring Broadway veteran Tina Fabrique as Ella Fitzgerald and featuring 14 of her greatest hits, including: 'That Old Black Magic,' 'A Tiskit, A Tasket,' 'How High The Moon' and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me,' this critically acclaimed musical play has the entire nation falling in love with Ella all over again." Ella Fitzgerald was the female voice of the American Songbook, and she still holds the title of the most popular female jazz singer in the United States.
City of Killeen kicking off its 125th anniversary celebration
The city of Killeen celebrated its 125th birthday with a premier party, formal dinner, and Broadway performance Tuesday night. It kicked off a number of birthday events that stretch through the weekend. The entertainment Tuesday night included seven vignettes from Broadway plays such as the Lion King, Cats, Chicago, and Phantom of the Opera. Some 500 people attended the birthday gala Tuesday night, at $200 a ticket. The affair helped fund many of the free birthday events.
