Kathy Nufer column: New London class helps shape author's latest book
In the first book, "Backstage Pass," selected as a top teen pick for 2006 by the New York Library, the lead character loses out on a dream role in a movie called "Wisconsin Girl," Wilcox said. In the second, newly released book, "The Hollywood Sisters: On Location," the sisters make their way from Los Angeles to Mexico and finally Wisconsin. The protagonist even gets interviewed by a Post-Crescent reporter. "I wanted to contrast Hollywood hype with the unflappable quality I associate with my Wisconsin friends," Wilcox said of including Wisconsin references. When DuVernay said he had an exceptional group of students willing to read the early draft, "that was music to my ears," Wilcox said. "They were the first eyes on it." And she welcomed what they had to say.
